The Old Homestead Vlog Transcript
Hi, Builder Tom here. Many of you have seen Bickimer’s online videos featuring our customer’s beautiful new homes. I’m reminded of the time when I was a young boy and my family had the good fortune to move into their new home.
Today, the two story house has white vinyl siding, but it originally had wood shake shingles and was painted green. The towering pin oak trees in the front yard weren’t much taller than my father when they were planted. Tom Redmond was our builder and years later he graciously visited with me when I was a wet behind the ears college kid thinking about taking up the same line of work.
We lived in a J.C. Nichols area in south Kansas City. For the last half of the twentieth century, the J.C. Nichols company was Kansas City’s premier residential developer. A certain amount of prestige came with being a builder in a Nichols area and a couple of years after starting Bickimer Homes I counted myself fortunate to be one of those builders.
I grew up on Oak Street with its Fourth of July picnics, backyard baseball and football games, and summer evenings playing flashlight tag. I did my homework at the kitchen table, played marathon games of Monopoly and watched the Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights. My Oak Street home was where my family ate together, shared laughter and tears, prayed, and played together. Even after my siblings and I left home, Oak Street became that safe place we could always come back to.
Bickimer Homes, building dreams on a solid foundation since 1982.
